I can develop your idea or product.

I am a freelance web and application developer.

I have several years of experience with Django having been an early adopter.

I have proven ability to quickly pick up existing projects and new technologies.

I am a British citizen and am currently living in Jyväskylä, Finland.

What can I bring to your organisation?

Experience with a variety of web technologies

I have been building web applications for over 10 years.

I have used a variety of tools starting with MySQL and PHP and moving onto Django which is still my framework of choice.

Deep technical knowledge

Having developed toy compilers and designed toy CPUs, I am well placed to solve tricky bugs, quickly identify performance problems and pick up new tools including proprietary and internal ones.

Holistic care

Holistic care is... well, holistic. As such in encompasses everything from care about code quality and automated testing to care about end-user experience to careful consideration of your project's needs and how different solutions might match up to one another. For example the requirements of a functional prototype or new project differ from the requirements of a mature product. Ultimately, holistic care is the application of a pragmatic engineering mindset to the whole of a project.

Case studies

Wolf & Badger 2014 / 2015

Wolf & Badger is a designer fashion store with two physical locations and an online store. Wolf & Badger acts as a stockist for emerging brands.

I worked as part of a small, mostly remote team. Feature work undertaken by myself, including new features and overhauls of existing features, includes:

  • The magazine section, which recieved a new, responsive design (supplied by a visual designer as Photoshop files) and was migrated from Wordpress to Mezzanine.
  • The designers section, which also recieved a new design as well as adding the ability to filter/sort designers.
  • A user's wishlist page, which recieved a new design and was made public, per user.
  • The product page which recieved a new design.
  • Internationalisation of the site to have subsites for the UK, the US and Australia.

Maintainance and internal work undertaken includes:

  • System administration including automating bringing up the whole system from scratch, automating software and distribution upgrades and automating backups.
  • Introducing continuous integration through Jenkins.
  • Integrating 3rd party software.
  • Admin facing/backend features.
  • Numerous bugsfixes, tweaks and refactoring.

Infoserve 2013 Autumn/Winter

I was brought onto this project as the sole full-time developer was leaving. Infoserve wanted to expand their business to include full service web and email hosting with user experience as a priority. While design work including a prototype of the front end had been completed, there were a number of backend integration issues to be dealt with.

The service was to be built around WHMCS, a product which takes care of most of the tasks involved in selling shared hosting, including provisioning, account management and billing.

I picked up the project quickly and identified that integrating Infoserve's back end user sessions with WHMCS's was a central unsolved question. WHMCS is proprietary software and did not have a documented API sufficient to achieve this task. I was able to reverse engineer parts of WHMCS internal API. After this was completed I was able to move the project towards a functional prototype which was essential to further understanding Infoserve's needs.

Other work undertaken includes:

  • an event based server to multiplex a single persistent connection to Nominet's Domain Availability Checker for PHP's single request single process model
  • a similar domain name generator using Princeton's WordNet.

Technology on the frontend included JQuery, Require.js, Lodash and Twig.js. On the backend PHP, SQLite and Silex were used.

Aardweb Development 2013

I provided training in Python, Git, Javascript and Django.

I set up and administrated an Ubuntu Linode VPS running Nginx and Uwsgi, including writing Fabric deployment scripts and setting up and incremental backup system with AWS S3.
